Handpainted silk and wool
For over twelve years I worked exclusively in fibers. I stretched yards of silk between sawhorses and painted dye directly on the fabric, using resists and discharges, screen printing and shabori (the pleating and tying of fabric). The wool was handpainted in a similar fashion, then lightly felted, pieced and appliquéd. The labor intensive construction of these coats resulted in glorious, luxurious wraps of color. (Special thanks to artist/seamstress/ and collaborator Sarah Lee)
