My grandfather had just died. I tried to understand with my six-year-old mind, so I closed my eyes and imagined all my favorites places and people. I saw them in full Technicolor detail. Then, one by one I erased the moon, my favorite sassafras tree, my little brother, my bed with the pink comforter, the street I was walking on, the sky, until there was nothing left except blackness. I felt peaceful and unafraid. And I discovered the power of imagination.
Making art is a process of opening doors and allowing imagination to flow through my cells, blood and flesh until it reaches the air and solidifies. Creativity drives me forward, sparks me deeply and helps me to know myself. Just as my six-year-old self used imagination to help understand the incomprehensible, I use brush, color, glue and shredded paper to discover what I feel, to shape my impressions of the world around me. I ask myself to get underneath the skin of my feelings and reactions, to get at the gritty, difficult shards that dig into my innards and urge me forward.
The gift I bring to this world is a passion for bold color and images that build a connection between the artist and the viewer.
I am the author of a visual memoir, Conceiving a Life: A True Story of Birth and Rebirth at Forty, reflecting on the arduous and transformative process of getting pregnant, reconstructing a life after divorce and seeking a spiritual home for a gypsy heart (the manuscript is currently seeking a publisher). I have a Master’s degree in Jungian psychology, and a Bachelor’s in Bilingual Education. I have exhibited my work throughout the Northwest for over 15 years.
